Practical Support

Do Online Grief Support Groups Really Help?

Dawn clouds stretching to a bright horizon

Some people hesitate at the idea of grieving over Zoom. Can a screen hold something this heavy? After leading our weekly online circle through hundreds of Thursday nights, my answer is simple: the healing was never in the room. It was in the witness. And witness travels.

What online groups do better

  • They exist. Most towns have no support group for child loss, and almost none welcome estrangement. Online, the room is there for everyone, from anywhere in the world.
  • They lower the hardest step. On the worst nights, driving across town is impossible. Opening a laptop in your own kitchen, sometimes still in the clothes you slept in, is survivable. Come as you are is literal here.
  • They gather your true peers. In a small town, the only group may be general grief. Online, a mother grieving a 28 year old son and a grandmother grieving estranged grandchildren each find people carrying their exact shape of loss.
  • They keep a rhythm. Same night, same faces, every week. Grief loses some of its power when the week has structure.

What to look for in any group

Wherever you land, look for confidentiality stated out loud, a leader who has walked the road themselves, a format that keeps sharing safe and balanced, and a room where no grief is ranked against another. Be cautious of spaces with no structure at all: unmoderated comment sections can deepen wounds as easily as soothe them.

Both kinds have a place

In person circles offer hugs and casseroles, and we love them: it is why our books equip anyone to start a local group. Online circles offer reach, consistency and your truest peers. Many of our members do both. Grief is not fussy about the medium. It asks only for witnesses who understand.

"The healing was never in the room. It was in the witness."

Our online community gathers Thursdays at 7:30pm EST, and the free 12 step program runs Tuesdays at 11am EST. Wherever in the world you are reading this, you are one link away from not being alone.

Questions we hear often

Are online grief support groups effective?

Yes. Structured online groups provide the core ingredients of grief support: consistent community, safe sharing and peers with the same loss. For rare griefs like child loss and estrangement, online groups often provide truer peers than any local option.
