Healing and Faith

Where Was God? Faith After Losing a Child

Sunbeams breaking through golden clouds

There is a question almost every grieving parent asks, and almost none of them will say in church: where was God? Some whisper it. Some scream it. Some stop praying entirely, because the last prayer they prayed was for their child, and their child died anyway. If that is you, I want you to hear this from a woman of deep faith: your anger does not disqualify you. It may be the most honest prayer you have ever prayed.

God can carry your anger

Scripture is full of people yelling at Heaven. David demanded answers. Job put God on trial. Jesus himself cried out, why have you forsaken me? The faith tradition did not edit those voices out, and that tells you something: honest anguish is not the opposite of faith. It is one of faith's oldest dialects. A God big enough to trust with your child is big enough to take your fury.

Beware the small answers

In your grief, religious people will hand you explanations. God needed another angel. It was His plan. Everything happens for a reason. Most of these sentences protect the speaker, not you. You are allowed to refuse small answers to the biggest wound of your life. I have stood at Heaven's door, and I still will not pretend to explain why my son was called home at 28. What I carry is not an explanation. It is a certainty of where he is, and Whose he is.

How faith survives

  • Pray honestly or not at all for a while. God prefers your true silence to a performed devotion.
  • Let others believe for you. In our circles, when one parent's faith goes dark, the circle holds the light until it returns. Borrowed faith is real faith.
  • Keep one thread. A single psalm, a candle, a walk at sunrise. Faith rebuilds from threads, not from arguments.
  • Watch for the small mercies. Most parents, looking back, can name moments they were strangely carried. Collect them without forcing conclusions.
"What I carry is not an explanation. It is a certainty of where he is, and Whose he is."

My time in Heaven showed me truths that carried me through every loss that followed. I share them gently in our community and my books, and I hold space just as gently for every parent still shaking their fist at the sky. Both belong at the table. Come argue with God among friends.

Bring the hard questions

Faith and fury both have a seat in our Thursday circle. Come as you are.
