I want to tell you about the sentence I did not believe when my losses were new: joy will come back. Not the shallow kind. Not pretending. Real, sustaining joy, sturdy enough to live in the same heart as the grief. I did not believe it, and then, slowly, it happened to me. This is the story of how mourning turns into light, as I have lived it and as I have watched it happen in parent after parent.
Light does not replace grief. It grows beside it.
The turn does not come by forgetting, moving on, or getting over. Any path that requires leaving your child behind is a path no parent will walk, and rightly so. The turn comes when the love, which is what grief is made of, finds somewhere to go. Love needs a task. When it has none, it circles as pain. When it finds one, it becomes light.
What the turn looks like
- It starts small. The first task might be surviving Tuesday. Then a journal page. Then one meeting where you say the name out loud.
- It often runs through service. The mother who greets each newly bereaved parent in our circle. The father who leads a group in his town. The grandmother who writes cards to strangers on their child's birthdays. Suffering transformed into service becomes hope, for both giver and receiver.
- It builds monuments of love. A scholarship, a support group, a garden, a book, a kinder way of moving through the world. Your child's name on something that heals people.
- It keeps the relationship alive. Purpose is a continuing bond. Everything I build, I build with Jonny.
Jonny's Angels is my monument
This whole community is what my mourning turned into. Every Thursday circle, every step of the program, every book, carries my son's name into rooms where parents are drowning, and hands them a reason to believe the shore exists. I have walked through losses most people cannot imagine bearing, and I am telling you from the far side of the valley: hope, purpose and healing are not just possible. They are waiting for you.
"Love needs a task. When it has none, it circles as pain. When it finds one, it becomes light."
You do not have to know your purpose today. You only have to take the next step with people beside you. The light is patient. It will wait for you to walk toward it, and so will we.
